The Guardian has published a user generated map of cuts to local services entitled Cutswatch Nice simple pins on a map to show what cuts are hitting where and some feedback from users of the services on the impact. The site seems to be moderated to prevent the trolls coming along and posting loads of false points, not very open but probably quite sensible. It might be a good idea to explain what the moderation/review […]

There is an old Hasidic tale (a Jewish folk tale) about a man in a small village who gossiped about his neighbours. When confronted by members of his community he claimed in his defence that what he was saying was true. Eventually one of the victims of the gossip appealed to the rabbi who spoke with the gossip explaining to the gossip how much hurt he was causing even if what he was saying was […]
I’ve just spent the best part of 2 days at the ESRI UK User Conference. I was wondering how they would sustain their annual conference, which has a high proportion of public sector users, in these troubled times (most event organisers in the public geo space are reporting lower attendances). The Government published an update to it’s business plans today. The idea that a government has a business plan that pulls together all of its initiatives and targets and monitors progress seems quite refreshing and open. This document tracks changes in the plan which is very useful for monitoring progress. It looks as if there is quite a bit of slippage in the plans for the Public Data Corporation. It seems that there is some form of conversation ongoing following the initial web based forum for comment and suggestions but I am not sure who is talking to who. The latest announcement from Francis Maude is pretty opaque and could be read as “everything is still under discussion” or as “we have pretty much made up our minds” The minister also said that although […]
There has been quite a lot of fuss over the last week about the discovery that Apple apparently store a wadge of location data on your iPhone (actually it isn’t your locations but the wifi spots you have been close to and Apple never meant to store it all anyway, or so they say). I think the discovery turned out to be a bit of a non issue but it did highlight how people are […]
